Bagru & Sanganer, Jaipur

A craft carried from teacher to student for over two centuries.

Long before it reached your home, every bedsheet in this collection began on a workbench in the villages outside Jaipur, where hand block printing has been practised, refined and passed down since the 1700s. Nothing here is mass-produced. Every motif is carved, mixed, stamped and dried by hand — the same way it always has been.

The process

Three days, five hands, one bedsheet.

Stage 1
✦

Carving the block

A master carver, or naqash, etches the motif into seasoned teak. A single block can take days to carve and is reused for years.

Stage 2
✦

Mixing the dye

Natural pigments — indigo, madder root, turmeric — are hand-mixed in small batches, exactly as generations before did it.

Stage 3
✦

Hand printing

The artisan dips the block, presses it by hand and mallet-taps it into the cloth, aligning every repeat by eye alone.

Stage 4
✦

Sun drying

Printed cloth is laid out in the open sun to set the colour, then washed to soften the cotton before it's cut.

Stage 5
✦

Final inspection

Every bedsheet is checked by hand for print, colour and finish before it's folded and readied to ship.

The hands behind it

Meet the karigars of Jaipur.

In the villages of Bagru and Sanganer, block printing isn't a trade you take up — it's one you're born into. Skills move from father to daughter, mother to son, artisan to apprentice, refined a little more with every generation.

A karigar can recognise a motif by the sound the block makes against the cloth. It takes years to earn that instinct, and it can't be replicated by any machine. When you buy one of our bedsheets, you're supporting that craft, and the family that keeps it alive.

Why no two are alike

The wobble in the line is the proof of the hand.

A machine print repeats flawlessly. A hand print doesn't — and that's the point. Look closely and you'll find the same motif stamped with slightly different pressure, angle and ink depth across a single sheet. That variation is not a flaw to fix. It's the artisan's signature.
