What is Jaipur Hand Block Printing? The 500-Year-Old Art Behind Every Virasaat Piece
Every bedsheet at House of Virasaat carries the hand of the artisan who made it. Literally. No screen, no machine. Just teak wood blocks, natural dyes, and a craft passed from father to son for 500 years in Sanganer, Jaipur.
The Process - How Your Bedsheet is Made
1. Carving the Block: A master carver hand-carves paisley, carnation, or elephant motifs into seasoned teak wood. One block = one colour. A 3-colour print like Madhuban needs 3 separate blocks.
2. Natural Dye Making: We use indigo for blues, pomegranate peel for yellows, madder root for dusty pinks. These are fade-resistant dyes that mellow gracefully, not with bleach.
3. The Printing: The artisan dips the block, aligns it by eye, and thumps it onto 100% cotton. A slight misalignment? That's not a defect. That's the Virasaat Promise - no two pieces are ever identical.
Why Hand Block > Screen Print?
- Screen print sits on top of fabric. Block print breathes into it.
- Screen print cracks after washes. Block print softens.
- Screen print is perfect. Block print is human.
In warm climates like India, this breathable, cool-touch feel is why our customers switch from polyester and never go back.
